Photo: USGS photo of St Helens eruption in 2004. I'm in this photo, look for the white dot. This photo makes me realize that apparently you can look small on film, but you have to be standing in front of an erupting volcano.

October 2004

5-miles from volcano...as close as you can get without hiking

Volcano Evacuation

Signs placed around the valley below Mount Rainier remind residents they live in the shadow of an active volcano

Elk Rock Lookout

Elk Rock at sunset. Mount St. Helens at back right of shot-capped with clouds/steam.  I think this is the best viewpoint of the area. It's about 12-15 miles from volcano

Thar she blows!

Tom Pierson with USGS talking on satellite phone to base in Vancouver, Washington, giving play-by-play of eruption he's witnessing (From media center viewpoint)

About 9 miles from volcano

Waiting

Two lookee-loos waiting for an eruption

Eruption Ending

I admit this isn't the best photo of me, but give me a break it's in front of what was an erupting volcano. (Note; I got sound first, that's why there's not that much steam) We were moved back to this spot, about eight miles from the volcano due to safety concerns

Riverbeds Below Volcano

Riverbeds carved into the earth after the 1980 eruption and massive lahar  (mud and debris flow)

From Johnston Ridge, five miles from volcano

Ridge is named after geologist who died at this ridge during the 1980 blast
